British born Victorian Simon Tabinor can win the 2012 New Dial Before You Dig Australian Saloon Car Series with a round to go at this weekend’s Wakefield Park Shannons Nationals.

The Holden Commodore VT driver needs to have a 121-point advantage at the end of round six and the title is his - and the good news is that he plans to defend the series victory in 2013.

“The last four national series winners have not seriously tried to go back-to-back – well I intend to,” he vowed recently.

Matt Lovell who won the series last year, started the year off eagerly with a clean sweep at the opening round, but the Ford Falcon AU driver has had to withdraw from recent rounds due to business commitments. Tabinor’s main opposition since has been ex-biker and fellow Holden driver Josh Kean who has been able to run up as many race wins (four) as the series leader after missing the opening round.

Kean who is second in the title chase will be looking for further race wins as well as ensuring that he holds second spot ahead of Harley Phelan (Commodore). Fourth spot is also up for grabs with former Formula Vee and now Falcon driver Ian Chivas wanting to fend off the Ford of Luke Westall and Matt Palmer’s Holden.

This round also features two lady drivers in Kelli Stephens (AU) and Naomi Maltby (Holden Commodore VN) who can take the lead in the Trophy Class for older Fords (EAs) and Holden (VNs).

The race weekend begins on Friday with three practice sessions at 10.25am, 12.05pm and 2:10pm. There will be two 20-minute qualifying sessions on Saturday at 11.00am and 1.35am before race one at 3.35pm. On Sunday there will be two further 14-lap races, scheduled for 11:20am and 1.50pm and the two can be seen and heard live on, and later on SBS’ Speedweek and Fox’s Speed.
