WYHOON RETURNS TO KUMHO V8 SERIES

2011 Kumho Tyres Australian V8 Touring Car Series champion Terry Wyhoon will return to driving in the series for ex-V8 Supercars this season.

The Image Racing boss, who ran as many as four cars in last year’s series for ex-V8 Supercars, will be back on the grid for the opening round at Sydney Motorsport Park in March with the backing of long-time sponsor Lubrimaxx.

He will drive a Stone Brothers Racing-built BF Falcon that he co-owns with James Bartsch and purchased late last year from Matt Stone Racing.

James Courtney and David Besnard drove the car to second place in the 2007 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 before Courtney and later Shane van Gisbergen used it in 2008.

Current V8 Supercar Development Series Champion Scott McLaughlin ran the car in Fujitsu colours in 2010 and 2011 before Ash Walsh raced it for the first half of last year’s Development Series.

While announcing his return, Wyhoon also confirmed that Bobby Jane – son of Hall of Famer Bob Jane – would stay in the Kumho Series in 2013 and delay his graduation into the V8 Supercar Development Series.

Wyhoon had purchased the #9 SP Tools FG Falcon last raced in Sydney 2012 by van Gisbergen with the intent for Jane to drive it in the Development Series, though has now placed the drive on the open market.

“I’d like him to do another year in the Kumho Series,” says Wyhoon.

“I met with Bob and his mother Laree and I think it’s the best decision. It’s a long-term project and relationship with Bobby. It’s not a step back; it’s a step sideways.

“I’d like him to gather a bit more experience. Everyone is champing at the bit to get in and drive the new wave of cars in the Development Series, but we need to stay calm, do some more Kumho Series racing and build his experience.

“He’ll drive the ex-SBR Falcon he drove last year, though upspecced and running a sequential gearbox, which is now permitted in the Kumho Series.

Wyhoon, who finished runner-up in the Kumho Series in 2009 and 2010, holds the series record for most race wins (20), most fastest laps (19) and most laps led (206).

The 2013 Kumho Tyres Australian V8 Touring Car Series will begin at Sydney Motorsport Park on March 23-24 with a bumper field expected for the opening round of the emerging series.
