SERIES LEADER SHOWS THE WAY
KERRICK AUSTRALIAN SPORTS SEDAN SERIES leader Tony Ricciardello continued his unbeaten streak in season 2013 by qualifying on pole position for round two at Mallala Motorsport Park today with a best lap time of 1 minute 6.6722 seconds.
At the helm of the B & M Ricciardello Motors Alfa Romeo/Chev, the West Australian proved to be too fast on his new tyres in both sessions to head arch-rival Victorian Darren Hossack by seven tenths of a second. He was fastest in the first where his times were impeded by coolant and sand on the track, and cemented pole by going faster in the second.
Driving the Auto Union Deutche Audi A4/Chev, Hossack only did the first session on his older tyres. “This is all about tyre usage and deciding which race I want to win, whether it is the last one tomorrow or the (feature) Clem Smith Cup. So where I start on the front row doesn’t really matter so much,” he said.
Starting third for the first outing will by Queenslander Phil Crompton in his Trans Am spec Moonbi Oil Traders Ford Mustang. After missing the opening round of the series it will be his best starting session in national title round, as he pipped reigning and current champion, Tasmanian born Queenslander Kerry Baily in his Chev-powered Rent Depot Aston Martin. Baily had an engine misfire on Friday and sat out Q1 before doing enough for a second row start in Q2.
Victorian Daniel Tamasi, third in the series, and his Chev-engined Luxury Auto Body Holden Calibra were a fifth fastest ahead of the Nissan Turbo powered Ford Escort (formerly raced by Mick Monterosso with a Chev V8 in it) of Nathan Mills, Shane Bradford’s Trans Am Chev Camaro, Jeff Barnes (Pontiac Trans Am), Colin Smith (Holden Monaro/Chev) and Dameon Jameson making a good recovery after his Jaguar XKR/Chev caught fire in Friday’s practice and looked likely to be out for the weekend at one stage.
The Kerrick Sports Sedans start with a 12-lap race one scheduled for 10.00am. The feature Clem Smith Cup over 15 laps is at 12:30pm and the final race, over 12 laps at 3:30pm.
