Pedders Toyota 86 completes successful test ahead of Australian Manufacturer's Championship Island debut

Local Victorian based team, Pedders Racing, recently completed testing at Winton Motor Raceway in preparation for the opening round of the Australian Manufacturers Championship at Phillip Island next weekend.

The test, held in chilly conditions, much like those often experienced at the Island circuit, was held at the tight Winton track as has proven to be to be an ideal testing environment due the variations in corner types and surface conditions, as well as allowing for the team to put their drivers to the real test in speed and race craft as explained by Team Principle and lead driver, Grant Phillips who explained,

“Winton is a completely different situation compared to Bathurst, the only place where the 86 has been on track so far. It requires a very technical approach compared to many of the other circuits on the Australian Manufacturer’s Championship calendar, with some sections of the track fast and flowing like Phillip Island where we head first, and also slightly similar to, albeit less daunting than, the challenges of Bathurst with plenty of tight sections to keep you on your toes.”

Gathering data in the early sessions, the team secured valuable knowledge to add to their early learning from their Bathurst Motor Festival debut, with the afternoon seeing fine tuning the Pedders/Whiteline suspension setup. Once premium handling and balance was achieved, both Phillips and co-driver Andrew Turpie set about pushing the Toyota 86 to the limits, every component working under race pressure as they made final changes ahead of the debut where it all starts to count, Round 1 of the Australian Manufacturer’s Championship.

Performance was all-round impressive as the Pedders Racing Toyota 86 took the punishment, setting the team up for a reliable season ahead, with the balance and handling in the zone, engine looking strong, and the DBA/Project Mu brake package putting the 86 right where it needed to be, with driver Andrew Turpie saying,

“The setup is now spot on so we’re looking forward to taking the car to Phillip Island and putting it to the real race weekend test.

“There’s always a few gremlins to overcome, but that’s why we have test days to find and correct these, and we’re happy that the Pedders 86 is looking like a great package and is already a pleasure to drive, so it’s now up to us as the drivers to get the most out of the car during the season.”

Having joined the Pedders Racing Toyota 86 team to take on Mount Panorama earlier this year, Australian television and film star Shane Jacobson couldn’t pass up another opportunity to get behind the wheel, joining the team at the track once more. Immediately heading out on track, Jacobson again took little time to become familiar with a new circuit, posting impressive lap times and going on to shave seconds off his times while providing further valuable feedback to the team.

Proud team owner, Grant Phillips, made it clear that nothing and no one has been overlooked, the extensive project made possible by outstanding team and sponsor support finally coming to a head, saying,

“We have been working on this Toyota 86 race package for well over 12 months, with the planning, acquisition, stripping, race preparations, testing, and of course everything else that goes into putting a strong vehicle and team together, we are finally ready for the season and for an all-in assault for the Class D title.”

With only one week remaining until Pedders Racing open their 2013 Australian Manufacturer’s Championship campaign, final preparations are being completed, with every detail considered and every component only the best available, the Toyota 86 now receiving its racing livery thanks to Grafico to stand out for all the right reasons on and off the track as it travels around the country as part of the popular Shannnons Nationals Motor Racing Championships.
