NEWCOMERS JOIN GT3 CUP CHALLENGE FOR SYDNEY RETURN

Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia presented by Pirelli returns to Sydney Motorsport Park for the second time this season, with the series regulars joined by two new faces to the category this weekend.

Among the seasoned Porsche racers will be debutants Jon McCorkindale and Ben Foessel, both lining up for the series’ second visit to the Sydney circuit following May’s Porsche Rennsport Australia event.

McCorkindale joins GT3 Cup Challenge with a diverse background in motor racing, moving into Porsche competition following a stint in Saloon Cars and Sprint Cars racing.

Foessel, however, is more familiar with the German race car, currently fielding a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car in the Australian GT Championship in conjunction with his maiden start in the GT3 Cup Challenge category.

“I am very excited about running in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia presented by Pirelli as it is a series we have been observing for some time now. Fortunately the opportunity arose for us to compete in the series this weekend, and I am excited to do double duties and the additional track time,” Foessel said.

“Racing at Sydney Motorsport Park will be tough both mentally and physically, in saying this it will be a really good test of my fitness and extra training I have done since starting the start of the year.”

As for the regular drivers, points leader Richard Muscat will aim to continue his strong form at the front. The Victorian has won the past six races in the Porsche category – three of which were completed at Sydney Motorsport Park. With Matt Kingsley’s 2009 record of 11-straight race wins in sight, Muscat will be hard to beat.

The Victorian will also be hard to match for on-track pace. Muscat has nine fastest laps from nine races this year - a streak that has beaten the previous record of eight-straight fastest laps set by reigning GT3 Cup Challenge champion Kane Rose last year.

Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia presented by Pirelli will feature one 30-lap endurance race on Saturday afternoon, followed by two nine-lap races on Sunday.
