JIM RICHARDS ENDURANCE TROPHY DECIDER UNDER LIGHTS
The Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia presented by Pirelli will make its second ever appearance at Queensland Raceway this weekend, with the Jim Richards Endurance Trophy set to be decided under lights.
After dominating the opening two endurance rounds, Richard Muscat heads to final race on maximum points, with Peter Fitzgerald heading a trio of drivers, including Michael Almond and John Goodacre, who could mathematically claim the Trophy.
The field will have its work cut out to beat the current series leader Muscat, who has set the fastest lap in all 12 races held this season.
Muscat, with eight race victories and three pole positions to date in 2013, is closing in on Matt Kingsley's 2009 benchmark season of 11 wins and four poles.
Almond however has form on the board at Queensland Raceway, winning the Saturday evening endurance race 12 months ago, his first victory in the category.
If experience is to come into play, Peter Fitzgerald's 21 Porsche starts at the 3.11km circuit should put the Melbourne based driver in good stead.
Currently second in the Professional Class point score, Fitzgerald won the first ever GTP race at the facility in 1999, and also claimed a Porsche Cup race win at the track in 2002.
Meanwhile in the Elite Class, John Goodacre has had a stand out season, claiming 11 race wins, which has the South Australian sitting second in the overall championship.
Despite never having raced a Porsche at the Willowbank circuit, Goodacre has previous experience at the venue in Superkarts and Saloon Cars.
A strong contingent of local Queensland based drivers will be out for a strong showing on home soil, including John Modystach, Steve McFadden, Grant Sparks and Richard Walker.
Now in its third season, the Jim Richards Endurance Trophy honours the Australian motorsport legend, whose credits include seven Bathurst 1000 and two Sandown 500 victories.
Richards claimed the inaugural Porsche Carrera Cup Australia title in 2003, with other Porsche successes including eight Targa Tasmania victories, and a total of six titles between GT Production and Nations Cup.
Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia presented by Pirelli will feature a 40-lap endurance race on Saturday evening, followed by a pair of 12 lap races on Sunday.
All of Sunday's competition from the Shannons Australian Motor Racing Nationals, including the final two races of the Porsche series, will be streamed live via www.thenationals.com.au.
