TABINOR TAKES TITLE

FOR THE FIRST time since 2007 the Dial Before You Dig Australian Saloon Car title has a back-to-back winner.

Even before the fifth round at Phillip Island on September 22 was completed Eurostar Diesels’ Simon Tabinor had successfully defended his series win of last year, beating the fellow Holden Commodore VTs of Morphett Vale Garages’ Wayne King and Casey Accident Repairs’ Travis Lindorff.

The first of three races started the Sunday race day off at round seven of the Shannons Australian Motor Racing Nationals with Lindorff taking the lead from pole sitter Gavin Ross at the start. But a safety car quickly appeared when Steve Yates (Ford Falcon AU) and Wayne Patten tangled and speared off in the Southern Loop.

The racing was full on and in the heat of battle several didn’t see the SC boards and flags, or simply seen them too late, therefore they had a 38 second time penalty added. In the meantime Lindorff led Ross, King and Tabinor. The latter dropped back to sixth behind Garry Hills (VT) and Kane Baxter-Smith (AU) by lap six, but then started a remarkable fightback.

Tabinor was third by lap six, second a lap later and passed King who was leading by that stage, on the final lap. But King was not done, coming back on the charge to the flag and just pipping Tabinor. Lindorff also got into the final act, making it three abreast and just 0.17 seconds covered them.

The only Ford in the top eight was fourth-placed Baxter-Smith ahead of Harley Phelan, Gavin Ross and Craig Campbell while the Falcons of Ryan Millier and Andy Nowland completed the top ten.

Tabinor led the second race throughout, holding out Lindorff while Ross was third ahead of King. Hills was next ahead of Nowland from the Fords of Lindsay Kearns, Travis Sharpe, Millier and Baxter-Smith relented several places on the final lap because he had run out of fuel.

In the last, Tabinor held a tentative lead over Lindorff when the race was brought to a halt, red flagged and abandoned after a spin by Millier at turn four before half distance. Several in the ensuing pack had to take evasive action, causing more chaos as some inadvertently hit others and some couldn’t regather the track because to the wet outfield.

The fifth round action can be seen on SBS’ Speedweek on Sunday October 6 and Fox’s Speed during the ensuing week on several occasions. More information and updates on the Dial Before You Dig Australian Saloon Cars are available at www.salooncars.net.au while complete details on the Shannons Nationals and all its categories can be viewed on www.thenationals.com.au.
