2014 CALENDAR CONFIRMED: ROUND BY ROUND

THE SHANNONS Australian Motor Racing Nationals has today unveiled the breakdown of categories competing at each of its nine rounds in 2014.

A packed program includes two new endurance-specific rounds and bumper programs at several key events targeted for growth next year.

The 2014 season will commence in Victoria with a major event at Sandown Raceway that includes seven categories, including Australian GT, the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge, Formula 3 and the Nationals debut of the Sports Racer series.

In one of the biggest changes, two rounds will take the form of long-distance spectaculars; Round 3 at Phillip Island to include the return of the Great Southern Four hour AMChamps race and a 101-lap Australian GT spectacular – plus the Shannons Nationals debut of Carrera Cup in a pair of one-hour Pro/Am races.

The traditional July date at Sydney Motorsport Park will also become a long distance round; a second four-hour AMChamps enduro to highlight an event that includes the return of the Radical Australia Cup First Neon 250.

Rounds at Mallala and Queensland Raceway will again include twilight / night racing with the South Australian round in particular featuring its strongest line-up for several seasons.

Mallala’s April visit will be notable as the first round of the revamped Australian Formula Ford Series to be held on the Shannons Nationals program, with a big field set to descend on the 2.6km circuit in the start of a new era for the open-wheel category.

An additional Formula Ford round has been added to the schedule, at Sydney Motorsport Park’s finale in early November, the new series now set to tackle five rounds with the Nationals next year.

Two Australian Superkart Championship Events, two Australian GT appearances, Historic Group N Touring Cars (at Mallala) and PRB Clumbans (Sydney Motorsport Park) are included on the schedule amongst the ‘core’ Nationals categories.

The blockbuster ‘Fight in the Night’ at Queensland Raceway returns with a bumper program while Wakefield Park’s annual October round is strengthened by the addition of the Kumho Australian V8 Touring Cars Series.

Key events like the Clem Smith Cup for Kerrick Sports Sedans (Mallala), The Saloon Cars enduro (Winton) and the Jim Richards Endurance trophy (Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge, three rounds) are all confirmed for next year.

Shannons Australian Motor Racing Nationals Series Director Rob Curkpatrick says that the 2014 calendar represents a strong step forward for the series.

“In the past we have traditionally had one or perhaps two rounds each season that haven’t been as busy as the others, but that will be far from the case next year,” Curkpatrick said.

“Each round is strong and each has a highlight category – or several highlights – that will be the main drawcard at each event.

“The two endurance rounds will be something different and works well for our calendar; the fact we visit Phillip Island and Sydney Motorsport Park twice allows us to run one round at each with categories that require or have asked for longer, endurance-style races.

“We’re also especially proud to be building the Mallala, Winton and Wakefield Park rounds and bringing some very strong categories to each of those circuits. They may not have the raw appeal that going to Phillip Island does, but they are incredibly important rounds to us and each now has a very strong program.

“We are working closely with the circuits to make sure that we step things up further next year and as a series, we’re very excited about the program we have put together.”
