ENDURANCE ACTION TO SPICE UP MALLALA RETURN
After two sensational rounds of the 2014 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia presented by Pirelli season, the one-make series now heads to Mallala Motor Sport Park to begin its coveted endurance championship.
This weekend, the opening race at the South Australian venue, which hosted the first ever GT3 Cup Challenge event in 2008, will feature as the first of three Jim Richards Endurance Trophy races of the 2014 season.
The Jim Richards Endurance Trophy, now in its fourth season, is a three-race championship where the highest point scorer from the Mallala, Winton and Queensland Raceway endurance races will be crowned the 2014 Endurance Champion. And with the past three Endurance Trophy winners – Roger Lago, Kane Rose and Richard Muscat – no longer in the category, the path is now clear for a new award winner.
John Goodacre will lead a six-strong South Australian contingent at the Mallala round which also features Sam Shahin, Keith Wong, John Karytinos, Jed Wallis and Class B newcomer Michael O’Donnell.
The local round for Goodacre will be his 24th in the Porsche series, boosting him to second in the all-time starters list, equalling Terry Knight, and placing the experienced racer three rounds shy of Jeff Bobik’s outright record of 27 round starts.
Victorian Fraser Ross currently holds the series lead, though Jon McCorkindale and Goodacre are eager to bridge the gap with four rounds remaining.
Ross holds a 43 and 45 point lead from McCorkindale and Goodacre, respectively, in the outright standings, while his lead is 45 and 46 points to the same trailing duo in the Class A standings.
Young Queenslander Matt Campbell enters the Mallala round with a 34 point lead in Class B from stablemate Tim Miles, with Richard Gartner a further 15 points behind in third.
The opening race of the Mallala round, the 40-lap endurance event, will be held on Saturday afternoon with the following two races to be held on Sunday.
