SA SPEEDSTER TAKES SPORTS RACER VICTORY ON DEBUT AT MALLALA MOTORSPORT PARK

SA local Roger I’Anson has won the opening round of the Australian Sports Racer Series at Malalla Motorsport Park today, winning two of the weekend’s three races en route to the ‘big trophy’.

By virtue of his round win, the 25 year old from Berri is also now leading the Series points ahead of defending champion Adam Proctor and fellow local racer Mark Short.

After coming home second in Saturday’s race one from Le Mans racer James Winslow, I’Anson lined up on the front row of the grid for the second race on Sunday.

A strong start saw I’Anson lead Winslow throughout the first few laps with a strong battle afoot before Winslow was forced to retire at the end of the third lap with car issues.

Left to run away at the front, I’Anson ultimately crossed the finish line 16 seconds ahead of second-placed Aaron Steer who drove a hard-charging race after starting from the back of the grid after missing Saturday’s proceedings.

Crossing the line in third was Short who along with Proctor – who had to drive through the field from last after a bad start - had the fans enthralled with a tight battle over the dying laps.

In the afternoon race a tricky start for I’Anson gave Steer the chance to lead for the first few corners, however I’Anson soon reclaimed the front spot during the first lap and retained it until a late braking move by Winslow saw a leadership change on lap nine.

The British-born, Sydney-based driver had driven through the pack from the rear of the grid before his impressive display was ended prematurely with the racer forced to retire to the pits with car dramas in the closing laps. Short again secured third position ahead of Steer and Proctor’s stable mate Darren Barlow.

The Australian Sports Racer will now head to Winton Motor Raceway for round two of the Series across June 13-15 – for more information, go to www.sportsracer.com.au

QUOTEBOARD – AUSTRALIAN SPORTS RACER SERIES: ROUND ONE

Roger I’Anson – winner of race two and three, second in race one, round winner

“This feels fantastic, it is just the way I wanted to start the season, it has exceeded my expectations and it has been great to be able to race against James Winslow and Adam Proctor and Aaron Steer – it has been a great weekend and I couldn’t be happier at the moment,” said I’Anson.

“It was a good weekend overall, it started out really tough for us, and we were just lucky that everything went right for us for the racing and qualifying unlike some of the other blokes, they had the rough end of the stick later on in the weekend but we managed to get it all at the right time. The West hung on really strong, my dad prepares it for me and did a great job, so now it is on to Winton and hopefully we can do the same thing again.”

Adam Proctor – race one: third, race two: fourth, race three: second

“We were last by the end of the first lap on the first two races before that last race, so it was good to get a clean race at the end there - we have a bit of work to do but we will come back strong,” said Proctor.

“We started the weekend off competitive, but then those two bad starts put us behind the eight ball and we had to use too much tyre to try and get through the pack so we just didn’t have enough to fight in the last race. The only way to win a championship is to finish, I knew we were second on points so it was just a matter of bringing the Stohr back clean and safe, we will work on it for the next round and will definitely be stronger.”

Mark Short – race one: fourth, race two: third, race three: third

“I was surprised, I didn’t expect to be this far up, the tyres seemed to suit my car which was really good - some of the handling problems I had before aren’t there now so I am really happy about that!” said Short.
