Ruggier Pushes Simpson In 100th Kumho Race
Commodore driver spends time up front in Queensland Raceway opener
THE Kumho Tyres Australian V8 Touring Car Series celebrated its 100th series race at Queensland Raceway today and, for a time, it looked as though the vice-like grip of Ryan Simpson on 2014 may be broken.
Rookie sensation Justin Ruggier qualified alongside poleman Simpson earlier in the day and jumped the Parramatta-based Falcon driver off the line to lead into the first corner.
Ruggier’s Eggleston Motorsport team is aiming for a rare Queensland Raceway double this weekend as it aims to add victory in the Kumho Series round to its win with Paul Dumbrell in last weekend’s V8 Supercar Development Series round.
Sydney-based Ruggier led the opening seven laps of the 12 lap race, though the series leader was able to work his way by and ease away to win by two seconds.
The victory extends Simpson’s perfect strike rate of victories this season with his seventh race win from seven races so far in 2014.
Former V8 Supercar Development Series driver Drew Russell made a return to one of his Newcastle-based team’s former Falcons, finishing third in his first race of the year after qualifying fourth.
Albury-based driver Matt Chahda finished fourth in his ex-Jason Bright Falcon clear of Kumho Series rookie Ryan Cochran.
The young Queensland local is driving one of MW Motorsport’s ex-Ford Performance Racing Falcons with an impressive support cast of friends on hand to watch – including factory FPR Pepsi Max driver Chaz Mostert.
Matthew Palmer finished sixth in his STR Truck Bodies Falcon clear of Steve Briffa, Chris Delfsma, local Shane Hunt (debuting his ex-Triple Eight Falcon) and John Vergotis.
The Queensland Raceway round will be completed tomorrow (Sunday August 10) with Race 2 at 10.35am and Race 3 at 3.30pm.
Live online streaming coverage of the Kumho Series racing will be shown tomorrow at the Shannons Nationals website –www.thenationals.com.au
