EPIC CHAMPIONSHIP BATTLE IMMINENT FOR SPORT RACER

The championship battle for the Australian Sports Racer Series will be alive to the very end with series rookie Roger I’Anson and defending champion Adam Proctor separated by just one point following this weekend’s penultimate round of the series at Phillip Island.

Proctor claimed the round victory courtesy of a clean-sweep to significantly cut into I’Anson’s points buffer, to see just one point separating the pair heading to the final round, to be held at Wakefield across October 17-19.

While Proctor enjoyed a clean-sweep on the same weekend as his 32nd birthday, it didn’t come easy with many race battles waged between Proctor and I’Anson; including a thrilling second race that saw the pair swap the lead twice in the final two laps.

Aaron Steer – third placed for the round – was also amongst the action and finished third overall for the round.

While the top three provided plenty of interest, there were also a number of exciting battle-packs across both races courtesy of Mark Laucke, Mark Short, Jason Makris, John-Paul Drake and Gerrit Ruff.

QUOTEBOARD: ROUND FOUR – AUSTRALIAN SPORTS RACER SERIES – PHILLIP ISLAND (19-21 SEPTEMBER 2014)

SUNDAY 21 SEPTEMBER 2014

Round winner - #1 Adam Proctor – AP Racing Stohr

“I am ecstatic, really happy, we had those two rough rounds and now we have had two really good rounds. It couldn’t have gone any better, I got the pole and all the wins, so I got the maximum points and there is nothing in it now – it’s game on.

Roger is ahead by one point (heading to the finale), so we will go there and try and get pole and that will put us ahead by one, then we will be going to race hard - there isn’t much between first and second so you have got to win.

Wakefield is in our home state so we have spent a bit of time there, so it is going to be interesting as we are at a track that is probably going to suit the Wests a little bit better, but it is at a track where we may know the circuit a bit better, so that should level it out.”

Race runner-up - #14 Roger I’Anson – Ken’s Exhaust Systems West

Today was a lot better than (earlier in the weekend), we got the reliability of the car sorted which was really good, and had really good speed. Race two really felt like we had a good speed advantage on Adam but we couldn’t capitalise on it, I did a good move on the outside but he just walked past me on the straight. In race three I got a terrible start, I managed to get past Aaron and caught up to Adam and then I just made a mistake and I couldn’t reel in the gap from the mistake I made. The car had good speed and reliability. I haven’t been to Wakefield before but I have seen some footage and the West boys say they go really well there, so there is no reason we shouldn’t do well either. The championship chase is what it is I guess, we have always gone out there to win the round and if we win the round we win the championship -  it doesn’t sound that hard does it!”

Round third place - #66 Aaron Steer – West Race Cars West

“The car is definitely a lot faster, so we will see how we go at Wakefield. I reckon it should be good fun. Our cars are pretty good at tracks like that, our cars have got really good handling at low speed tracks. We run a little bit more aero than the Stohr and our brakes are really good too so it just makes it a little bit easier for us.”
