Adam Proctor has successfully defended his Australian Sports Racer series crown in one of the more dramatic conclusions to a national championship seen at a Shannons Nationals event.

Entering the day leading by two points, Roger I’Anson looked to be in the box seat to take the championship when Proctor spun off the road from second place mid-way through race two on Sunday morning.

With a damaged car, he recovered to the back of the field however I’Anson was in a position to place one hand on the trophy – right up to the point until his car expired with four laps to go.

Proctor could only sail past to the championship lead as I’Anson was left stranded on the start-finish straight watching his title hopes slip away.

The works West outfit made a massive effort to get the Adelaide driver back on track for the final race, changing an engine in under three-hours – though ultimately it would be in vain.

Despite spearing the car off the road early in the race, Proctor did enough to grab third in the race and seal back-to-back championships for the Stohr team.

Third in the championship goes to West racer Aaron Steer, while the round honours went to Jon Miles and Mark Laucke, with Proctor in third.

2014 Australian Sports Racer Champion, third for the round - Adam Proctor - #1 AP Racing Stohr

“I am pretty happy with that, it’s what we set out to do and it’s the fourth consecutive title in Sports racer which is great for our brand Stohr and I am just really proud of our team. Emotions almost got the better of us yesterday but we came back strong today and just did what we had to do. I don’t even know how to explain today after what happened in the race this morning, and I guess it was just meant to be for us because it all sort of fell out in the end. I have now been racing twenty years and Roger is probably one of the best, cleanest, fastest guys I have ever raced, I have a lot of respect for him and he has a bright future if he can take the next step because he is a top driver and a top guy, I really enjoyed the whole season with him.”

2014 Australian Sports Racer Series Runner-up – Roger I’Anson - #14 Ken’s Exhaust Systems West

“At the start of the year my aim was to win the championship obviously because that is just what I am like, but together if we had known that at the end of the season we would come second and be really close we would have been happy but obviously you get greedy as the year goes on. Obviously I am devastated about what happened but that’s life, you have to move on, we have shown what we wanted to, that we are quick and we are a good team and I think we have learnt a lot of respect throughout the year. And what Adam said was really nice, I think he is a good driver and he has deserved the championships that he has won and they are obviously a quality team. I have to say a big thanks to my parents for all the work they have put in. Also our car is for sale if anyone is looking for a quality car, with a brand new, fresh motor!” laughed I’Anson.

First for the round – Jon Miles - #66 West Race Cars Australia West

“This is fantastic, I was offered this drive on Thursday, to turn up to such a great bunch of people here, it’s been great. A big thanks has to go to Aaron, Greg and Deb as well – they made this weekend fantastic and put the weather on as well. I just learnt the car over the weekend, I was able to get a bit of pace, and I just wanted to try and get as close as I could all weekend to the fast guys. I got lucky in the last race with the championship at stake so the main guys were taking it a little bit easy, but still I had great fun with Mark and I am really glad to be here.

Second for the round – Mark Laucke – #55 Laucke Flour Mills West

“It is a great surprise, it is great to be up here in second amongst the people who can drive, and so it is really nice, if I have to thank anybody though I do have to thank Aaron (Steer) and his crew because they turned a prototype American racer into a prototype Australian racer in record time, and it is reliable and performs well and it makes me look good. Thank you to them for building a remarkable car!”
