ADELAIDE TEAM RETURN TO KUMHO V8S WITH BALLARAT ROOKIE

Jason Leoncini steps up from Super Six Touring Cars with THR Developments

ADELAIDE-based THR Developments will return to the Kumho Tyre Australian V8 Touring Car Series this season.

The squad has previously campaigned multiple cars in the series for ex-V8 Supercars, though withdrew after last year’s opening round at Mallala.

2014 Super Six Touring Car Division Two Champion Jason Leoncini has signed with the team to drive its #45 Commodore VZ in the V8 Touring Car category.

The Team Dynamik-built car was raced by the late Jason Richards in 2003 in the V8 Supercars Championship and was previously raced in the Kumho Series by now-Development Series racer Josh Kean.

It will be re-liveried with backing from R&J Batteries, Inland Motor Body Works, DEJ’s Party Shop and PPG.

Ballarat-based Leoncini, 26, will make his V8 Touring Car debut at Sandown in the opening round of the series at the end of March and compete in the full five round championship, which is part of the Shannons Nationals travelling racing roadshow.

“The Super Six Touring Car category has been a great series with a great bunch of blokes always keen to help you out,” says Leoncini, who runs the milling area at Albins in Ballarat – the company that produces the transaxle gearboxes used in V8 Supercar racing.

“We’re in for the year with THR in V8 Touring Cars and I am pretty pumped about it. I’m heading to Adelaide to go to the Clipsal 500 to get fitted up in the car and I’ll have a chance to chat with Taz Douglas (2014 Bathurst 1000 runner-up), who is driving for THR in the V8 Supercars Dunlop Series over there.”

While the Victorian will focus on his V8 Touring Car program this year, the chance to race at Bathurst in Easter at the Bathurst Motor Festival will see him make a one-off return to the Super Six Touring Car Series.

“We’ll go there to do some laps and get some experience up there,” says Leoncini.

“I’ve never been there so it’s a great opportunity to get some laps.”

Leoncini will get his first taste of V8 power at a test with THR at Mallala in South Australia in March prior to making his racing debut in the Kumho Tyre-backed series on March 28-29 in Melbourne at Sandown Raceway.
