KERRICK SPORTS SEDAN SERIES READY TO FIRE UP FOR BIGGEST YEAR YET
2015 is set to be arguably the most exciting year yet in the Kerrick Sports Sedan Series, with 16 entrants lined up for next week’s opening round at Sandown Raceway (March 27-29), and more expected to join throughout the season.
The optimism for the season ahead is echoed by words of National Australian Sports Sedan Association (NASSA) President and KSSS competitor Phil Crompton, as he outlined what lies ahead for the series this year.
“2015 is shaping up to be the biggest season we have had in a long time. There’s a great mix of cars and drivers guaranteeing we will see some great battles from the old guard and the new, and we are hoping to welcome even more to the Series as the season progresses,” said Crompton, who will have knee surgery next week with plans to return to racing in the KSSS later this year.
“Sandown is a great track to host our first round and always provides some great racing. Our second round of the Series at Winton Motor Raceway, as part of the support show for the V8 Supercars, has already attracted a strong entry list with more in the pipeline – it may only be early but this season is already shaping up to be just fantastic.”
Old favourites and new faces are set to take to the track next week, with a fresh set of challengers awaiting eight-time and reigning series champion Tony Ricciardello as he returns to defend his title in the B&M Ricciardello Motors Alfa Romeo GTV and his long-time sparring partner, Darren Hossack - himself a two-time champion and formidable competitor set to once again line-up in John Gourlay’s Auto Union Deutsche Audi A4.
Also returning will be Colin Smith - who with a consistent 2014 performance in his MR Automotive Holden Monaro was able to hoist the runners-up trophy at the end of last season - 2013 champion Bruce Banks, series regular Michael Robinson, 2014 debutant Steven Tamasi, and Bruce Henley at the wheel of his ex-Patrick Dempsey Mazda RX8.
The 2015 season is also set to host six-time national sedan series champion Kerry Baily, who was able to make only one event start last year. Baily’s last full season championship attempt in 2012 earned him the title and in 2013, before his disqualification in the Phillip Island round, he was in contention to once again take it out. Baily’s steed, the Rent Depot Aston Martin DBR9, will certainly be an exciting addition to this year’s series line-up.
Joining Baily in taking a 2014 one-round appearance to a full series tilt in 2015 is young gun Thomas Randle, following an impressive Series debut at last year’s Phillip Island round. Randle will be at the helm of his father Dean Randle’s title winning (with James Sera at the wheel) SAAB Aero Sports Sedan.
A host of new faces will also be lining up next week, including 2014 Victorian Sports Sedan Champion Shane Woodman (2006 BMW M3 GTR); Andrew Brown and his self-built Trans-Am Chev Camaro; and veteran Peter McLeod in a Mazda RX7 which MARC (McLeod Auto Racing Company) Cars Australia has designed, built and tested over the last five years as a modern version of McLeod's well-known 1983 Australian Group C Touring Car, Endurance Championship winning 'Slick 50' Mazda RX7.
The MARC Cars involvement doesn’t stop there either – with two MARC entries confirmed. Michael Benton – last seen in the Shannons Nationals with the Australian Manufacturers Championship – will drive his MARC steed, while Ryan McLeod will enter his car with a yet to be confirmed driver.
The Kerrick Sports Sedan Series is one of the most exciting on the annual Shannons Australian Motor Racing Nationals calendar, pitting a range of ‘wild and winged’ modified sports sedans and trans-ams against each other. Part of The Nationals since its inception in 2006, the Kerrick Sports Sedans represent the fastest tin-tops in Australia and in some cases, the fastest outright cars on a number of national circuits. In 2015, the Kerrick Sports Sedan Series will contest five national circuit racing events across four states:
- Round One – 27-29 March, Sandown Raceway
- Round Two – 15-17 May, Winton Motor Raceway
- Round Three – 7-9 August, Queensland Raceway
- Round Four – 16-18 October, Wakefield Park
- Round Five – 13-15 November, Sydney Motorsport Park
