SIMPSON, EMERY AND CRESSWELL TAKES SANDOWN HONOURS

Newcomer Ryan Simpson has had immediate impact in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia presented by Pirelli series, taking the outright and Professional Class round win at the opening Sandown round while Geoff Emery and Nick Cresswell claimed the Elite Class and Class B round victories, respectively.

SIMPSON, EMERY AND CRESSWELL TAKES SANDOWN HONOURS

Following his race one win on Saturday, Simpson had a horror start in race two after being run off the circuit at turn one. This left Emery and John Goodacre clear in the lead until Jon McCorkindale, who started ninth, came through the field to join the leading duo, posting a new lap record in the process. McCorkindale passed Goodacre for second on the final lap but could not challenge Emery for the win.

Simpson inherited third after Goodacre was dropped to fourth post-race for his part in the turn one mishap. Tim Miles placed fifth from Dylan O’Keeffe, John Karytinos, Jed Wallis, David Ryan, Jono Taylor, Sam Shahin, James Abela, Scott Taylor and leading Class B trio Nick Cresswell, Aaron Seton and Michael Tsigeridis in 14th, 15th and 16th, respectively.

Simpson returned to the top in race three, moving to the lead early before maintaining his spot at the front until the chequered flag, handing Simpson the outright and Professional Class round win.

“It’s a great start to the season. I’ve learnt a lot so I’ll take that knowledge and go to Winton understanding what I have under me now, and also knowing what these guys race like having not competed with many of them before. It was a good start to the championship,” said Simpson, who was joined on the Professional Class podium by second placed McCorkindale and fellow newcomer O’Keeffe.

“I like the series because the cars are the cars and there’s not much you can change on them. You come in after a session and work on your driving as much as you tweak the car. It’s good that you all know you’re racing the same machinery and trying to get the most out of it.”

McCorkindale placed second in the final race from Goodacre, Emery, O’Keeffe, Miles, Wallis, Karytinos, Shahin, Abela, Scott Taylor, Jono Taylor and Class B race winner Jaxon Evans in 13th.

Emery came away from the weekend with the Elite Class round win, joined by Goodacre and Miles on the class podium.

Cresswell claimed Class B round honours from race one and race three class winner Evans and Brian Finn, who had a strong, consistent debut round.

“It was a great weekend and it was really good to race against young guys like Jaxon Evans and Aaron Seton; they both have great careers ahead of them. The car felt great and I’m happy with the round win.”

The Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia presented by Pirelli series now heads to Winton Motor Raceway for round two on June 12-14, which will also see the start of the Jim Richards Endurance Trophy.
