The opening round of the Shannons Nationals at Sandown is shaping up to be one of the strongest rounds of the season, with the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) giving members free entry to celebrate the first CAMS run event.

As well as free entry for CAMS members, spectators will be able to enjoy a wide-range of categories and competitive national racing.

The Touring Car Masters will also be returning to the Shannons Nationals calendar and the Australian GT Trophy class making their debut.

CAMS CEO Eugene Arocca is excited for the first round, and to opportunity for local spectators to enjoy an affordable weekend of some of the best national racing in Australia.

"CAMS is committed to engaging with motor sport fans and participants at every level, so allowing CAMS members free entry to the opening round of the Shannons Nationals is a logical thing to do,” Arocca said.

“The Nationals provides a great opportunity for motor sport lovers to enjoy all the exciting elements of the sport up close."

Current Touring Car Masters Champion John Bowe is looking forward to returning to the Shannons Nationals calendar for two rounds.

“I am honestly looking forward to the Shannons Nationals this year racing at Sandown and Phillip Island … we have a lot of people that like the show we put on and it’ll be good to be the focal point for the spectators,” Bowe said.

“The Shannons Nationals is motor racing as we used to know it, and it will be good for the other categories racing there.”

“I’ve been racing for 40 years and anytime I am at the race track I feel complete.”

Also racing at Round 1 of the 2016 Shannons Nationals are Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge, Kumho V8 Touring Cars, Formula 3, Formula Ford, Kerrick Sports Sedans and Sports Racers with 145 entries in total.

Off track entertainment includes the Touring Car Masters Compound, which features the Shannons Insurance ‘Big Rig’, Touring Car Masters merchandise and the chance to meet the stars of the category with autograph sessions taking place across the weekend.

The opening round of the Shannons Nationals will take place at Sandown International Raceway on April 1-3.
